Cervical lesion

Hello! Last summer (2022) during a smear test a nurse said she would refer me to the clinic because I had cervical erosion. In September 2022 when I arrived at the clinic the doctor said I was at the wrong one and said I had a polyp to remove but he had no equipment to remove it he then examined me and said that he would treat cervical erosion and see me back in 4 months and as I had a normal smear test result everything should resolve itself after this treatment. I’ve only received my call back appointment yesterday (over a year longer than 4 months) only to be told that I should have been referred to a colposcopy clinic and I now have a lesion and a polyp. Am waiting now again for an urgent appointment to have polyp removed and for them to check cells on my cervix.

im terrified. Did the last doctor miss something important and now I’ve been sitting for a year letting something grow?
what is a lesion is it the same as erosion or is it something different? All previous smear tests have been normal.

thank you

  • Hi, just thought I would message as I'm in a kind of similar situation but not really...

Was told yesterday at my routine smear that i had markings on my cervix (39 always had negative smears). Nurse said it's probably fine but she wants a 2nd opinion from my Dr and now I'm just left waiting for a week with all sorts going round my head.

What did she see? I'm guessing a lesion like you. I'm the worst with Google. And all it says was a lesion could be precancerous (not necessarily cancer)!! I'm always told to stay off the Internet but what else can you do when they leave you waiting with no info!

  • Hi! Can u phone your doctor for an appointment? I’d just phone and push for one nicely!!

  • The nurse kindly sorted it out there and then for me. I'm seeing the Dr next Thursday. Which was a result because its so hard to get in usually.

  • That’s great, I’m gonna say just try not to worry too much, I had erosion and it was fine… it was just that my 4 month review turned into a year wait and now I don’t really know what is happening, just wondering why they didn’t refer me to the clinic I’ve been referred to now back last September!

  • No i totally understand. They've basically left you waiting for 8 months. It's not great if they feel you needed to go to a colposcopy clinic. However, I'm sure it's all fine with you as well. I just wish they at least tried to comfort us in times like this instead of making us worry x

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

It is good to hear that you have got an appointment with the doctor and hopefully he will be able to give you an opinion as to what he thinks the 'markings' maybe.

I really would stay away from google. This does not replace your GP's experience and can often lead to more worry.

If you would like to talk any of this through with the nurses on the helpline then you can always give us a ring.

Our number is freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can appreciate the worry it is causing.

The term lesion can be used for many different reasons and describes an area that does not look normal. It might be an erosion for example. Cervical polyps are benign (non cancerous).

So far your cervical screening results have come back showing no abnormalities, which is good. However, I am afraid that you will now have to wait to be seen to find out what is the matter.

I hope you have some support and you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
