Scans

Hi there, my mum had a full hysterectomy and a tumour on her ovary came back as carcinoid cancer. She hat CT scans and an MRI which came back clear (other than the ovarian tumour). She now has to have a PET scan as she has been having digestion issues.

I’m very worried. I wondered, if the CT scan and MRI have come back clear, could the PET scan come back with a significant  problem if there was one, or would it be in the early stages?

thanks x

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am afraid it is very difficult to comment on your mum's situation without being involved in her care. It is also very difficult to speculate on what the PET CT scan will show.

It is quite normal to have several different types of scans as they all look at the body from different angles.

A PET scan is a test that creates 3 dimensional (3D) pictures of the inside of your body. PET stands for positron emission tomography.

The PET scan uses a mildly radioactive liquid to show up areas of the body where cells are more active then normal.

It's used to diagnose some conditions, including cancer. It can also help to find out where and whether the cancer has spread.

The PET CT scan is also done to rule out cancer so try not to over think it for now.

I can understand how unsettling it can be waiting to get the results but try if you can to take one step at a time. Her doctors are not able to give you any answers until they have had all the results back from her different tests and they have discussed her with their colleagues.

I hope that they get to the bottom as to what is causing her digestive issues.

You are both more then welcome to ring and chat to any of the helpline nurses. We are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and our number is freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
