DIEP FLAP SURGERY

Hello everyone,

I had DIEP FLAP surgery for my right side/boob - 6 days ago. I am home now so do feel free to ask me questions if you are considering DIEP flap surgery, I'll be happy to help. Recovery seems hard as I am sore around the tummy area. I was wondering does anyone else feel very bloated and gassy. My abdomen feels so tight too. Does anyone know when the tightness will fade?  Also my energy feels depleted and I am trying to get a good diet in.

I would definitely love to hear your experiences.

Best wishes,

Lilly.

  • Not sure yet if I'm having lumpectomy or mastectomy. If it's a mastectomy I've been told that they'll be doing reconstruction at the same time. It will involve tummy and so will have tummy tuck. Not sure if this is the same procedure as yours as the term DIEP hasn't been mentioned as yet. Supposed to be seeing consultant on Thursday so may find out more then. Can I ask how long you was in hospital?

  • Hello Pippin.

Thank you for responding. I really appreciate that.
yes they took tummy fat and made my boob. I was suppose to be in hospital for 3 days but stayed for 5 only because I had v low blood pressure. I was trying to each and drink like mad to get the pressure up haha.

  • Hello Lilly and thanks for posting

You are posting on the ask the nurses section of cancer chat. As you are asking other patients who have been through similar to share their story and experience with you you may wish to post this question on a different thread as well as here.

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery. Every patients recovery time will be different but do remember it is still very early days, so be kind to yourself and take it easy. On average it takes 6-8 weeks to recover from this type of operation

Your body has been through alot in the past week and it now needs time to rest and heal itself. Most people will feel very tired for a couple of weeks after surgery so do listen to your body and rest or have a sleep if you need to.

Likewise some swelling and bloating is to be expected but this should ease off as everything settles down.

Of course if you notice any other concerning side effects like an increase in pain or swelling or a temperature let your team know straight away.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
