Bladder cancer & new back pain

My name is Michelle & I have bladder cancer & started chemo last June & now going through immunotherapy.

i have not really had any issues with the treatment til now and for the past 3 weeks have developed lower back pain.

after the chem it was good news as the tumors had shrunk. I have been positive with the treatment and have the occasional blip of panic but in the main have tried to keep routine life as normal as possible. I am due a scan soon & consultant appt is booked for 15 Feb.  I have had urine tests done but not showing any infection tion so I have googled !  Lower back pain seems to suggest the cancer has spread & I know until I get the scan & see the consultant for the results not is 100% but I have spiralled into a panic.

it does not help that I am now on thyroid tablets whilst already being a type 1 diabetic.

I just feel that I am taking one step forward and two back.

i am unsure whether to ring the consultant or just wait til the appointment.

i was at clinic for a treatment Thursday and rested & was pain free but was taking pain relief

today took safe pain regimen but back pain comes on usually late afternoon

i know there is no definitive diagnosis til I see the man himself but the ups & downs are getting to me so I thought I might reach out

would love some guidance if anyone can offer any help

thanks in advance

  • Hi I have aggressive bladder cancer feeling very low ect at the moment

  • Hi

I am only able to read the 1st few words of your post & im new to this site x I hopefully nuw we are linking up via the internet I can read on further x

  • ?? Yes nice to meet you I feel very lonely going throw this .

  • Hi Michelle and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are having treatment for bladder cancer at the moment and appreciate how this back pain is now worrying you more.

Unfortunately there is no one here nor on google who can diagnose or say what the cause of this back pain is. As this seems to be affecting your every day and playing on your mind do let your specialist nurse or doctor know sooner rather than later.

Back pain is very common so there hopefully is a simple reason for this unrelated to your cancer but for your own peace of mind get this checked out soon.

I hope you can speak with your doctor soon and that everything turns out okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with aggressive bladder cancer. I can understand that if you have been recently diagnosed there is so much to take on board.

I do hope that you are getting support from the hospital and from friends and family.

We have information on our website for bladder cancer which you may find helpful to look at here.

Treatment decisions will be dictated by your general health and the type of bladder cancer that you have. Do make sure that when you see the doctors or any of your medical team that you have all your questions answered. It can help to make a note of any concerns that you have when you go for your appointments.

There may be support within the hospital or you may have a Maggie's centre nearby that you can access online or in person. Have a read about them here

Try and take someone with you to your appointments as there is often so much information to take on board and decisions to be made and it can help to have another person listening in.

if you would like to ring and chat to one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    all the best,

    Catherine
