Follow up

I was diagnosed with grade2 breast cancer in October 22 & had a lumpectomy & lymph nodes removal in November 22. I  had radiotherapy in February 23. Should I have had a follow up appointment & mammogram by now as I've not heard anything & getting a bit stressed out now. I did phone the hospital but they just said I was on the list but couldn't give me a date. I also take Letrozole & have terrible hot flushes.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I would get in touch with your breast care nurse and ask them about how you should be followed up. It does vary from hospital to hospital. I am not sure when you say that you are on a list whether this is for the mammogram or to see the breast care nurse or the surgeon for a follow up.

You would normally have a mammogram each year for 5 years so it is worth checking this with your breast care nurse. if you are unable to get hold of them then do leave a message on their phone. You could also speak to your breast surgeon's secretary if you have difficulty getting hold of your breast care nurse.

We have some information on follow up on our website which you can see here and Breast Cancer Now's website here

You may also find it helpful to join a moving forward face to face course designed for women who have finished treatment. Have a look here.

Whilst you are waiting for your appointment it may be a good idea to discuss the letrozole side effects with your GP.

We do have some tips on our website with coping with hot flushes which you may find some of the tips helpful here

I do hope that you know more soon.

Do give us a ring if you would like to talk any of this through. Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine thanks so much for your reply & for the advice & information.  I will try the breast care nurses again although they are difficult to get hold of. Thanks again.
