Breast pain

Hello. I have had breast pain on and off for a few months now, i put it originally down to hormones/ periods. I finally managed to get an appointment yesterday (Thursday) and the GP was great. However, she said she found a lump of some sort on the side of my right breast, this hurt when it was pressed. My husband and I had done the checks many of times over the padt dew months but didn't find anything, I am so upset and scared now. My mum has not long got over breast cancer a few years ago. I have 2 young children including a 7 month old and I'm terrified! I keep reading about lumps being painful but some not... I think I'm looking for some sort of reassurance?!

I have an appointment to go a week Sunday for a check, would this be an ultrasound as I'm 36?

  • Hello Kjc87 and thanks for posting

It can be a worry undergoing tests especially as your mum quite recently was treated for breast cancer, but try not to let your thoughts run away with you for now.

Breast pain is common and as you say often brought on by periods and changes in hormone levels. On it's own breast pain isn't linked to breast cancer so there is likely to be another reason for this. You can read more about breast pain here.

Breast lumps again are common and usually the result of breast cysts or fibroadenomas especially in younger women. There is more information about benign ( non cancerous) breast conditions here. Some lumps are painful, others not but only further tests can confirm the cause of the lump and what needs to happen next.

Younger women tend to have a ultrasound in the breast unit due to denser breast tissue but some will have also have a mammogram to check out the breasts. Depending on what they see on the images they may also wish to carry out a biopsy to give further information, if necessary.

There is information about breast clinic appointments and what might happen here.

I hope everything goes well for you and you are able to get some peace of mind. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
