Anal Cancer

I was in the shower cleaning myself when I found a small pea sized hard lump. I googled and top ones were. Warts, Piles and Cancer.

i have had piles a long time ago and it doesn't appear to be the same. I have never had warts but after looking at images it’s nothing like that.

the cancer ones I have quiet a few of the symptoms but not all of them and it’s only one small lump. It’s the fact it’s a lump in the anus that is mortifying I know I’m an adult but I’m not sure how to call a doctor to explain this without the embarrassment. I’m also a teacher that makes arranging and and attending appointments hard without having to ask for the time off. Do I lie or go through the embarrassment of explaining it. I have recently lost my mum to cancer and this has really shook me

Hi Sweyn6, write down any questions you’d like answering because your oncologist is the best person to give the answers you need, otherwise it’s easy to forget until you get home and if like most of us, then be troubled with afterthought.
We’re all different and handle things differently, but when told my tumour was over 5cm and had grown around my left ureter I decided then to NOT concern myself with things I couldn’t change, ie: , where it was or where it could go. I literally took it one day at a time, trusted that the Oncology and radiology staff would do their best for me so the least I could do was look after myself. stened to their instructions and advice, also listened to my body and gave whatever it needed: sleep, hydration, nutrition, pain meds and relaxation. Stress serves no purpose and is damaging so if can keep it to a minimum that too will help your body to recover and heal.  Your journey is just beginning so I wish you strength, determination and oodles of positivity

Yes I have a lot of questions and I am determined to get this show on the road so to speak x I am calling it a blip in my life and I have to much organised haha for this nonsense as I call it x I have to be fit for my holiday in October that's my plan....

  • So sorry to hear about your health worries. I hope you managed to get some answers since posting this. My husband recently had a rectal bleed. He didn't want to go to the GP because he knew she would have to examine him internally and he was embarrassed but I made him go. He is currently booked in for a colonoscopy after a positive FIT test. We are so worried but I don't regret making him go to see the GP. Hoping and praying he gets the all clear on Monday but it is always best to get seen to be on the safe side.

  • Hello Sweyn6 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of cancer.  It looks like you are now waiting for the results of a biopsy and scans you have had.

I am afraid you will have to wait for your oncology appointment, which looks like it's happening today before you know what the results are.  I hope it goes well and you have a much better understanding of your situation.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • I found a pea sized lump in August and after 3 biopsies, 2 under general anaesthetic, cancer was confirmed in October. I then had 28 days chemoradiation which wasn't as bad as I feared - no vomiting or diarrhoea but the radiation burns were quite bad towards the end.

I'm now feeling nearly back to normal and waiting for a scan in June which will hopefully give me good news.

I took painkillers when I needed to, even though some made me quite sleepy which wasn't a bad thing in the circumstances.

It's so hard not to get stressed and depressed as it doesn't help but I think that sometimes it's good to have cry about what you're going through.

  • I've had really great support from my hospital, husband, family and friends so I've not yet felt the need to speak to anyone else. This of course may change but I'm prepared to talk to anyone who will listen!

I'm now away on a luxury cruise which I booked welll before diagnosis. I did try to cancel but it meant losing a huge amount of money. I wasn't sure I'd be up to iit but other than keeping out of the hot sun and needing to be sure where the nearest toilet is it's been really great!

I know the days ahead may be challenging but with everyone supporting me and me being open about what I've been through, I'm feeling OK .
