External beam radiotherapy

Hi I’ve been diagnosed with localised prostate cancer. Gleason 3+4 PSA 7.2. I am 66.

i am starting external beam radiation next week.
I have chosen 5 doses at double strength rather than 10 every other day.

I have had fiducial insertions and a spacer fitted pre treatment.

Prostate removal was an option but I had previously had a Turp which I think makes it a bit more difficult.

I was told that prostate removal and radiation offers very similar results.?

Does having 5 double shots of radiation offer the same results as having 10 single shots.

Any after advice also appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hello Maltaman and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate you having questions.

It is also my understanding that removal of the prostate following a previous TURP whilst not impossible can sometimes cause complications. As you say the outcomes for both surgery and radiotherapy for localised prostate cancer are very similar which is why both options are usually given to patients.

Research has shown quite recently that increasing the dose of radiotherapy over a shorter length of time (and less overall dose) gives the same outcome with less side effects which is why this is now being offered in some hospitals. This is a type of external beam radiotherapy called sabr (stereotactic  radiotherapy) that is a precise method of giving high doses of radiotherapy. There is more information about this here.

    I hope this is helpful.
