Smear test

Hi

so last week had a smear test (first ever) the nurse carrying it out mentioned that my cervix looked abnormal, no skin on it, red and bleeding so this along with the symptoms I have been having she had concerns and has done an urgent referral which I’m still waiting on appointment for, as you can imagine I have been panicking as it was referred for ‘signs of malignancy’

in the meantime I have had my smear test results today and they read normal, I’m just wondering if this means there is no possible way of me having cervical cancer and can put my mind at ease or is this still possible

thanks

  • Hello ccde98 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are needing to go for some more tests after having your screening appointment, this understandably is a worrying time for you.

Unfortunately no one here can say what the matter is but it is important that this is checked out just to be on the safe side.

Redness of the cervix can sometimes be caused by an ectropian here but a closer inspection at colposcopy of the cervix alongside a biopsy if needed will give more information about what this is.

Most abnormal cells in the cervix that cause cancer are caused by high risk HPV but as I am sure you are aware nothing is 100%. At the same time this doesn't mean that you have something as serious as cancer but any visible changes to the appearance of the cervix need to be checked out.

I hope this helps a little. Try not to over think for now and keep your thoughts on other things whilst you wait.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
