New Melanoma diagnosis.

Hello all. I have been reading posts on this form for a day or two and have noticed how supportive it is. With that in mind I thought I  would post for the first time. My husband had a suspicious mole removed a month ago. We were called to the hospital for results and attended today. Melanoma was diagnosed. I think we expected it but it was still a shock really. I swing from optimism to being terrified to be honest. The nurse who gave the news and discussed the next steps was lovely. The melanoma is measuring at 1.02mm on the Breslow scale which appears to be very very minimally over the 1mm cut off for offer of SLNB. Am I thinking right in saying that or is .02 significant using this system? The nurse was indicating that it was positive that it appeared so so marginally over the 1mm threshold stating that at 1mm the biopsy wouldn’t be offered. This felt a great comfort at he time. Is that right or am I being overly optimistic? I guess I am just so worried about understanding prognosis and how the Breslow relates to this. Husband is being referred to Tertiary centre and due to be discussed at MDT on Monday. Sorry for a long post. It’s just so new and overwhelming atm. Many thanks for any response:)

  • Hi Sharon,

As you've put this in the Ask The Nurses threads I will leave them to answer you fully. However, I can discuss your questions by private message if you wish as I have plenty of experience with this subject. I will send you a friend request &, if you accept it, I will send you a message explaining the significance of the Breslow depth & all about the SLNB etc. Good luck,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thanks so much, I’ve just messaged you :)

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am glad you have found the forum supportive and it looks like you have another forum user to be in contact with now too which will be helpful.

The Breslow score is a melanoma staging tool to help doctors decide on treatment plans. Melanoma UK also has a good page on it here.

It is hard for us to comment specifically on your husband's case as we are not part of his treating team. However, it appears that he has an early melanoma as his nurse confirmed that the melanoma was not deep, but that he will also get the extra reassurance of a SLNB

Supporting a loved one through cancer can be draining mentally and physically. Here is more information on taking care of yourself, as well as others.

Take care and if you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.

  • Hi Sarah, thank you very much for your reply, it was very useful . We will try and remain positive on the facts we have so far and see what comes next. Best wishes and thanks again.
