Radical Prosectomy

Hi All

Was diagnosed with prostrate Cancer 2 days ago with a Gleason score of 3+3, my doctor is recommending radical prostatectomy (with only 1 nerve sparring) given the position of the tumour.

I'm am 55 years old and recently spilt with my partner of 23 years and terrified about dealing with this alone. But also worried about the side effects of the surgery and my ability to form a new relationship given the potential for erectile dysfunction and leakage problems.

The doctors is saying I can have the operation in 2-3 weeks which feels very soon and I wanted to know more about other options, radiotherapy, nano knife surgery etc...

Has anyone else had similar dilemmas about which option to choose and what were the outcomes.?

Any advice welcome as I not thinking very clearly right now!

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Mate, sorry can’t advise.having same dilemma 52 years old Gleason 9. Have choice of hormones and radiotherapy or surgery? Spoke to surgeon who wants to take prostate, lymph nodes and nerves out! Terrified. Same dilemma, look forward to seeing what replies you get.

  • Hi its a dilemma I'm also facing I've sent you a friend request if you'd like to share any thoughts.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Treatment decisions are often challenging and many people struggle with them, but I'm sure you know, only you can decide what to do.

I think it is important that you understand all the information you have been given by your specialist team to help reach a decision. There is often quite a lot to take in and it can be overwhelming,  so I would encourage you to get back in touch with them if there is anything you aren't sure about.

We have some information about how treatment decisions are made which you can see here. If you scroll down you can see how likely men are affected by erectile dysfunction and incontinence by having surgery or radiotherapy. The charity Prostate Cancer UK has some further information at this link.

Nanoknife, also called irreversible electroporation (IRE) uses an electric current to kill the cancer. It is not currently a standard treatment for prostate cancer treatment outside of a clinical trial.

I see that a hospital in London are offering this treatment. You can read more about this by clicking here.

Again, do speak to your specialist team who can advise you if this treatment may be a suitable option for you.

I hope this has been of some help .Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
