Scared and worried

I have recently found a lump in my breast in the past few weeks, and have urgently been referred to the hospital.  I am now even more scared, although the gp did say they couldn't feel any other lumps and it feels really small.

I am now really worried about the next steps.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry you you are worried about a breast lump. Most breast lumps turn out to be benign ( not cancerous ), but they have to be checked out just to be sure.

The charity Breast Cancer Now has information on what to expect when you’ve been referred to a breast clinic and you can read this information by clicking here.

You can read about the tests a person may have to help diagnose a breast condition or cancer here. The main tests are usually a mammogram, ultrasound and if necessary a biopsy.

Waiting when you are worried is never easy and I’m afraid there is no real way round this. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help. But until you know more it’s natural to worry.

I hope you know more about your situation soon and that everything turns out to be okay.  If we can help in any other way please do contact us again. If you would prefer to speak to one of the nurses directly, you can telephone us on 0808 800 4040. We are here from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

    Kind Regards,

    Celene
