First use of Lanreotide - is this normal?

My husband has a metastatic pancreatic NET that has spread to his liver and 4 lymph nodes. He begins chemo this week. Last night he had his first injection of Lanreotide; later that night he developed stomach pains that were severe enough to stop him sleeping; he's still feeling very bad now. We don't know what is normal and what to worry about and I'd be grateful for some advice. We have left a message with the NET nursing team but haven't had a call back yet. Many thanks.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to read about your husband's situation. It sounds like you are both going through a lot.

One of the side effects associated with the drug lanreotide is that it can cause stomach pain and you can read more about this here. Taking a mild painkiller such as paracetamol may help with the discomfort.

It's good that you have left a message for his healthcare team about this. They can assess your husband and give him some medicine to help. If it's taking a long time for the team to get back to you, and the pain is not settling, you can contact the GP who should be able to help.

I hope the pain settles soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thanks very much Celine, that is very helpful. The link you gave is far more insightful than the leaflet that came with the Lanreotide..

He's spoken now with his nurse and she recommended some buscopan, so he is now taking that as well as parecetemol, but is still in a lot of pain.

The nurse mentioned that it would have been easier for him to tolerate the Lanreotide if he was taking Creon with food but the hospital pharmacy was out of stock so we are waiting on that.
