Which scan to locate metastases/new primary

Just waiting for a CT scan to confirm if my breast cancer has spread or if it’s another primary gynae cancer that I have (degenerate cells suspicious for malignancy found in a recent pelvic washing).

Does anyone know how effective CT scans are at detecting tiny metastases? Are other types of scan better/helpful for diagnosis/discovery like MRI or PET?

Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. The CT scan is a good test but it is really only your doctors involved in your care that can say whether it is enough to diagnose another primary or a breast cancer that has spread. They may suggest doing a biopsy or an MRI as well but of course I can't be sure. They may also do various blood tests.

Do ask your doctors all these questions as they are the best people to tell you what they are investigating.

I can understand how unsettling this must be waiting for them to tell you more. If you have a specialist nurse you could try and talk to them. They may be able to give you more information about your specific situation. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor questions.

If you would like to chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then do get back to us. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm

    All the best,

    Catherine
