Severe reaction to first chemo treatment

A friend had a severe reaction to their first chemotherapy treatment - trouble with speech, dizziness and breathing - and has been kept in hospital with low oxygen and cardio issues. They don’t seem to know why this has happened so I thought it worth checking if anyone else has witnessed that sort of reaction, what the cause could be and what might help. Many thanks :)

  • Hello JakiB and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your friend and this must be a worrying time for everyone involved.

Before a patient starts cancer treatment the team involved will run a series of tests to check that the person is fit and well enough to have the treatment but unfortunately sometimes there can be a reaction to chemotherapy.  Patients are closely monitored whilst having their treatment to ensure that any reactions are picked up quickly so they can be managed.

It sounds like your friend has reacted in a bad way and this could be caused by a range of different things. However the specialist team involved in your friends care will be doing all they can to find out more and improve your friends situation.

Do encourage the family and next of kin to ask the doctors any questions they may have and keep themselves updated with what is happening.

I wish your friend all the best

    Take care

    Naomi
