Stuck on a long waiting list

Hi, I went to my GP on 29th July with a small lesion, they referred along the cancer pathway of 2 weeks. Finally had a photo taken  3 weeks later. I heard nothing so called 4 weeks ago to be told I had been missed and needed a biopsy, after much fighting for an appointment I had that 4 weeks ago. Now they tell me I have to wait up to 10 weeks for the results and if it is Cancer then up to 62 weeks to have it removed.

They left me for FIVE MONTHS!

How can this be acceptable in a supposed developed country?

How can the rich celebrities such as Hugh Jackman tell us to seek urgent treatment? Clearly only the rich get any form of healthcare now.

Why do TV adverts and all that nonsense tell us to get checked out when there are no Services available?

I complained and got an official response which I was not happy with so went to the Health Ombudsman, they now tell me it will take up to 4 months for my case to be allocated to a case handler.

Meanwhile my suspected Basal Cell Carcinoma is getting bigger on the side of my nose.

Any advice please??

  • Hi,

Sadly your story isn’t that unusual these days.It would make a good example of how services have deteriorated in recent years. Pre-Covid, things were already awful - so don’t let anyone fob you off with that tired excuse.

Have you considered volunteering as a CRUK Campaigns Ambassador? www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../become-a-campaigns-ambassador

The duties aren’t too onerous. I find the role is a positive way to channel my frustrations about the way the NHS has been under-funded and badly led in recent years.

    Good luck with your treatment!
    Dave

  • I’m sorry to read about the negative experiences you’ve had from health professionals.

We are aware that the NHS is under huge pressures at the moment causing delays in processing laboratory results. This is due to staff shortages.  Hospital staff work very hard to try and give their best, but due to lack of resources, things don’t always go smoothly and this is incredibly upsetting for people like yourself.

If you wish to raise this concern further you can contact the hospital's PALS (Patient Advice Liaison Service) who can investigate your situation further. There is more information about this here. The NHS website also has information about raising a complaint at this link. You can also contact your local MP.

It may help you to know that if you are diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma ( BCC) this is the most common type of skin cancer that typically grow very slowly, rarely spreads, and is rarely serious.

Treatment to remove a BCC isn't regarded as urgent and people often have to wait several months for treatment. You can read more about this by clicking here.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thanks so much. I will do. Take much care.
