Hi,
I was recently hospitalised as i randomly became very constipated which is very unsual for me. I had tried over the counter medications which were not working and i was in severe pain for which i went into A and E. At this point an emergency x-ray and CT scan were done in the A and E department where an 11cm cyst was found on my right ovary and a blockage in my bowel which they thought may be caused by the cyst. I was then admitted into hospital to investigate the cyst further and to try other laxatives to try and unblock my bowels.
I was then given 3 enemas, none of which worked and then some oral laxatives the following day and then Moviprep as a last option before potential surgery of the bowel. Eventually the moviprep worked and after many days of what felt like labour contractions, i managed to go to the toilet.
Alongside the laxatives, while i was admitted in the hospital a tumour marker blood test was taken and an ultrasound done to look at the cyst more closely.
Once I managed to empty my bowels, i was discharged and the doctors said that I would get an outpatient appointment for an MRI to do further checks on the cyst. I assumed the blood tests must have been normal and i thought nothing of it.
A few days after I was discharged i have had a phone call for an MRI which has been booked in for next week. I then checked the discharge letter which shows the rest of the blood tests as normal but the Ca125 is 125. None of the doctors discussed this with me at the hospital. I called my GP to query this with a receptionist and to check what would happen with that and to check whether a referral had been sent to gynaecology but they said that they can’t see whether it has and they can’t do a referral as the discharge letter does not tell them to do this referral.
i am now very confused as to what will happen once the MRI is done as i know that there is a cyst on the right ovary but if there is no referral to gynaecology, then who would be discussing the results of the MRI with me? Is it supposed to just be my GP? I assumed that it would be somebody from gynaecology but my GP are saying that they can’t send the referral to gynaecology as the tests were arranged by the hospital and it should have been them that did the referral which i don’t think has been done and the GP are saying that they can’t check if it has been sent or not.
This is the last thing that i need to be worrying about really as i assumed that the hospital and the GP surgery would sort this out between themselves rather than me having to chase them and no one giving me any straight answers or telling me what will happen once the MRI is done. I have read other scenarios on here where people have been in a similar situation and the referral to gynaecology was sent by the GP but i haven’t seen any where the hospital requested the MRI and whether a referral to gynaecology was automatically done off the back of this or whether the GP would then have to separately send a referral based on the MRI. Sorry for the long post but could somebody please help to clear things up for me to make sure that the right things are being done.
Thank you in advance.
