Oesophageal cancer

Hi we currently have my father staying with us and was given six months to live he is visiting us from Scotland as he lost his wife 3 mths ago I am worried that his symptoms are worsening how do I get him checked here he has lived in Scotland for over 20 years

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry your father is unwell and his condition seems to be worsening.

To help your father, you can register him as a temporary resident with your GP and explain the situation. Your GP should be able to assess him and advise you further.

Alternatively, you can call the 111 service for helpful advice and to be referred to out-of-hours doctors if needed. This link explains their service.

In case of an emergency, please call 999 for an ambulance.

I hope you find this helpful. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina

  • Thank you we did try 111 but they couldn’t find his info and couldn’t help  but I have managed to temp register him with a GP if we managed to get him to stay with us permanently how quickly would he get seen by a consultant as his throat is getting worse he has constant burning and pain is there anything that would help this thank you for the reply

  • Hello and thanks for getting back to us

Glad you have registered your dad with your GP surgery. You didn't say whether he has seen the GP as yet but I think this is the priority so they can assess him and direct what needs to happen next.

If the GP felt your dad needed medical care straight away they may tell you to take him to A&E or arrange an ambulance. However if they thought he needs a referral to a hospital consultant urgently this may take a couple of weeks. But as you say your dad needs to decide whether he is going to be permanently staying with you as this will help guide the next steps for you all.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
