Unkown type of brain tumour

Hi, I had a golf ball sized brain tumour removed 7 weeks ago. From the MRI the doctors were unsure what type of tumour it was and said they normally can make a good guess. Since then they've been trying to figure out what type it is. Throughout this process they've told me 3 types they think it might be and then have changed their minds. I haven't had an update in weeks now and I'm just wondering if this is rare?

How likely is it that I just won't find out what type it is? Is it possible for it to be an unknown type? If that's the case how long many months would they run tests before letting me know that they will never know?

The surgeon removed 100% of it and said a month ago he thinks I won't need radiation - will this be the case if its an unknown type?

Thanks

  • Hello maeveteddy and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you have been waiting for the results following your surgery.

It is really only the doctors involved in your care that can tell you more about your tumour and whether you will need further treatment.

Diagnosing tumours are not always straightforward. I would contact the surgeon's secretary to see when you are likely to hear more.

You could also contact Pals (Patients advice and liaison Service) so they can look in to this for you. Have a look at their details here

I do hope that you know more soon. If you would like to ring and chat to one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
