Granulosa cell ovarian cancer

I have been diagnosed with this today, 5 weeks after surgery to remove a large ovarian cyst. They provisionally think Stage 1C. I've got to decide on treatment option - either radical hsyterectomy, omentum and lymph node removal, or be more conservative and just remove ovary (I'm 32 and don't have children).

The doctor explained this was quite an uncommon type of cancer - I'm struggling to find much information about from reputable sources. Are you able to point me in the right direction of any information you may have?

Many thanks

  • Hello Sunflower girl123 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand that it is a lot to take on board and it does sound like you are still processing it all. It also sounds like the doctors are still getting more information about the stage of your cancer and this may have a bearing on what type of surgery they recommend.

As you are still young they may recommend just removing the one ovary and keeping the other ovary and womb intact. The discussions about your cancer and how it is treated are usually made at an MDT (Multidisciplinary Team ) meeting where all the specialists involved in your care meet to discuss your cancer and treatment. Deciding which treatment option to take can be difficult so I hope you are getting enough information from your specialist team to guide you.

Granulosa Cell ovarian carcinoma as you rightly say is a rare cancer. We have a page on our website which you can see here and the charity Target Ovarian has some more information here

Target Ovarian also have a booklet for younger women which you might find helpful to read through. It has useful discussions on fertility. Have a look here

You have posted on 'Ask the nurses' but if you post on another thread or you start your own thread you may have more responses.

You were only diagnosed yesterday and I am sure the doctors and specialist nurses will be sitting down and explaining more about what is involved. You may find it helpful to read through the information in the links, perhaps ring Target ovarian 0207 7923 5475 or our helpline nurses before you see the doctors at your next appointment.

Don't be afraid to ask your doctors any questions or concerns that you have. You may find it helpful to write any questions that you have so you have time to get across any concerns that you have. It can also help to bring a family member or friend to hear what the doctor has to say as there is often a lot to take on board.

If you want to ring and go through any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
