Worried husband

Hi,

I’m writing this as I don’t know what to think or do.  My wife was late a couple of months ago and then  two months ago was extremely heavy for longer than normal.  This resulted in being anaemic and needed a transfusion and supplements. The following month she was heavy again but not a long this time, however she called the dr for advice or something to help. She was sent for blood tests, asked for swabs,  stool samples and also suggested for an ultrasound.

The bloods came back satisfactory but today she was asked to call the dr about the swabs . Then asked to take them again.   Still no results from stool or a date for ultrasound. However for someone so strong and telling me to never to Dr Google she has actually succumbed to that herself and convinced herselfit’s not good news and I now feel helpless. She’s not had a smear in years and I always bagged her to. I pleased to say she now has booked in for one , but that appointment was moved to later time as not enough time was allocated for it when she first booked.

She is spotting but nothing major just regular.   We just can’t work out if the bloods would have shown anything, why she having to do more swabs and does ultrasound suggest the drs are looking at anything specific with cancer.  She did have a chest X-ray the other month for the anaemia and transfusion so guessing that’s good also as something would have shown?

We thought it was menopause but dr kind of ruled that out as she’s just turned 44.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated

TIA

  • There something called the perimenopause and that hits around the age of 40. Not saying this is what your wife is enduring, but at 44 it's more than possible her body is preparing itself for menopause.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your wife. I can imagine how unsettling it must be for you waiting for tests and then results.

Without being involved in your wife's care it is difficult for us to speculate as to what could be the cause of her symptoms. It is usually a combination of tests that are needed before the doctors can establish the cause. Hopefully the ultrasound will be able to give the doctors an idea as to whether more needs to be investigated in the pelvic region.

There are many non cancerous conditions so try if you can not to overthink it all for now. Doctor google seldom helps at this stage and often leads to more worry.

If either of you would like to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so.

We are here Monday to Friday 9-5 and our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
