Biopsy results

I had biopsies of duodenal nodule taken 2 weeks ago and was advised could take 10-12 weeks for results. As their is strong family hx of gastric cancer in the family I find this concerning because I do know duodenal cancer is known to be a particularly aggressive form and can require radical treatment if not caught early and a single nodule usually has high suspicion of being malignant. I was wondering if this time scale us normal.

  • Hi Alna and thanks for posting

I’m sorry you've been told that you may have to wait 10-12 weeks for your biopsy results. Waiting for biopsy results is not easy, I think it is close to impossible not to overthink things, but there is no way to work out what the results will be in advance of being told.

In some areas, there is a shortage of consultant pathologists to read and interpret results. Some biopsy specimens do need to be sent off to larger more specialised pathology laboratories for analysis, and this can add to waiting times, depending on the number of samples that each lab is currently seeing.

The best thing to do is to speak to your doctors about this. If you have access to a specialist nurse you could discuss this further with them.

Hospitals will do their best to address any concerns patients have about their care. You may find it helpful to contact the hospital's Patient Advice and Liaison Service ( PALS)   to discuss your concerns about the wait.

Please give us a call if you want to talk anything over, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays from 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
