Cervical biopsy results

Hello

I recently received my results back from a cervical biopsy and it states that the biopsy has found microglandular hyperplasia.

Further review is needed and a review with management team before they can give me more information.

What does this result mean and more review?

I asked if it could be cancerous and was informed more review is needed and they'll get back to me.

Thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to give you very specific information on this. The term hyperplasia is a general team referring to an overgrowth of cells. The term alone does not mean cancer. Micro glandular means tiny gland cells, the ones that line our cervical canal and cervix. Sometimes, cervical cells can be affected by pregnancy, hormone changes, and contraception use. Rarely, it can mimic early pre cancer cell changes, or be related to uncommon gene variants that someone has. It sounds like the pathology report/findings, are being reviewed by your hospital team, and they will decide what, if any treatment/follow up, might then be recommended.

I can appreciate that this must be an anxious time for you. But try to not overthink this. Cervical screening and investigation is designed to detect any early abnormal cell changes and deal with them before more extensive treatment would be required.

Try and keep occupied and use the support of friends and family whilst you wait.

    Take care,

    Vanda
