MRI results and feeling lost and confused?

Hello,

I have had an ache down the side of my neck and into my head for about 6 weeks. I also have active lymph nodes in my neck and near clavicle. I looked inside my mouth and noted left tonsil swelling. I was referred on the 2 week pathway as the pain was pretty bad and antibiotics did nothing. It resulted in a pulsating feeling deep.in my neck below tonsil.

Saw ENT, no concerns with the nasal camera, couldn't see any issues. He sent me for a just in case scan to ease my anxiety. Ultrasound found nothing. MRI has come back with a small concern? She said something about my left tonsil tissue and just below it. She then (registrar) said I could leave it and see how it goes??? Or have a full tonsillectomy and have the tonsil biopsied.

I signed for the operation and left and now have a million questions? Is this normal to have a choice? If this isn't cancer what could.it even be? One choice to another here seems very extreme. I've asked the secretary for confirmation but she's off for a week and I'm sat here festering and catastophising.

Any advice appreciated

  • Hello Loulouz and thanks for your post

I’m sorry you have a health worry at the moment.

It's possible that the tonsil swelling may be due to an abscess or cyst which may explain why you were given a choice in managing it. But your doctor needs to confirm this for sure for you.

Tonsil symptoms are fairly common but tonsil cancer is rare, and when it does occur, it usually affects people over the age of 60.

I know waiting to find out more is never easy but hopefully you will be able to speak to your doctor soon. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
