My scar after mastectomy looks terrible

My scar is horrible.  It is not straight like I see some on TV.  It looks awful but I feel bad about complaining and would be terrified to undergo more surgery.

  • Hello Mazy ,sorry to hear you are not happy about your scar . How long has it been since you had surgery ?
I had bilateral mastectomy in September 22 and the scar is pretty well healed . You could use some bio oil to massage into it ? I am sure all surgeons are different ,but it will heal well .
Maybe have a chat with your Breast Nurses for some advice .

  • Thank you for reply. Surgery was in February this year.  Its just all lumpy and bumpy but has healed well.  I just didn't expect the horrible looking scar. May be ready now to speak to nurse. Thanks so much

  • Hi mazy , I took my dressing off today and I actually cried at how ugly mine looked.  I know it’s only a week after surgery but I must admit it is not how I expected it to look.  Hopefully once it’s healed it will start to look better

  • Sorry forgot to say. Mine was lumpectomy surgery

  • Hi Mazy,

    Welcome to our forum.

Don't despair, it takes about a year for the scarring to fade and start to look a bit better. Did you have a lumpectomy or a mastectomy? I have had both, a year apart in the same breast. My breast was a terrible mess after my lumpectomy. The second time, my surgeon tried to tidy this up, when I was having a double mastectomy. It is now 13 years since the second surgery and apart from having a diagonal crease across my breast, it doesn't look too bad. The other breast looks fine. I did use Bio oil, but it is very messy and wasn't very kind to my new leather sofa - another downside to cancer treatment, I suppose.

Just be patient and you'll see an improvement.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • HI Jacksonjet,

How are you doing? Don't be too downhearted. It is very early days for you still. Please see my reply to Maisy, as this will apply to you too.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Mazy and thank you for posting

I am pleased to see so many of the lovely ladies on the forum have got back to you with their experiences and some useful tips.

As many have said it is worth trying some bio oil, if you haven't used this as yet as it really can help with scar tissue. Also do speak with your specialist nurse so they can take a look and see what they suggest. Sometimes it is appropriate for the surgeon to tidy things up but see what the nurse says and go from there.

Undergoing any treatment for cancer can be gruelling and dealing with any after affects can be tough at times, especially with self image, so be kind to yourself.

Wishing you all the best but do get back in touch if you want or need to.

    Take care

    Naomi
