What does it mean

Received the letter that was sent to doctor and it says a word on there that wasn’t mentioned at my meeting. PLEOMORPHIC invasive lobular carcinoma is what there calling it now. Was never told it had changed to pleomorphic now. Googled it and it’s not good. Why wasn’t I told. All that was said in meeting was that more surgery needed then treatment :(

  • Hi Kirstymarie and thanks for your post

I was sorry to learn of your situation. I can imagine this is a worrying time for you.

It is difficult to say why you weren't told at the meeting that you have a pleomorphic type of invasive lobular breast cancer, this may be something you would need to ask your breast specialist or breast care nurse.

When diagnosing breast cancer a biopsy is done so that the cancer cells can be closely examined under the microscope.  This will tell the doctor what type of breast cancer it is, its characteristics, for example, whether it has particular receptors for particular drugs, and how fast-growing it is. There are different types of lobular cancer one of which is pleomorphic. Other ones you may hear about can include mixed or tubule-lobular. Knowing this information helps the doctors to plan treatment.

However many other factors are also looked at such as the size of the cancer and how far it has spread (the stage), whether the person has been through the menopause, a person's general health, and whether they have other health conditions.

I can understand you wanted to search what pleomorphic means. However it is important to know the information on the internet is talking about this in general, it is not talking about your individual situation.

While invasive lobular breast cancer may be more difficult to treat than ductal breast cancer, the aim of the treatment will be the same to remove the cancer completely and reduce the risk of it returning. The main treatment would be surgery alongside possible other treatments such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy depending on the situation.

It would be worth talking things through with either your breast care nurse or breast specialist as they know your situation. On our website, we have information on invasive lobular breast cancer which you can read here. You may also find it helpful to look at the Lobular Breast Cancer UK website which has personal stories of people diagnosed with lobular breast cancer and campaigns for better information and research into this cancer.

I hope this helps in some way.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Jemma
