Dcis

I have been told by oncologist  that 17mm dcis intermmediate/high  grade removed with large area (10mm) of clear margin. Radiotherapy for a block of 5 days recommended.by oncologist .But oncologist aldo said that this dcis has  gone may never bother me again but due to risk ot reoccurrence radiotherapy recommended but I did not have to take it as I will vd getting annual mammograms.i agreed to take radiotherapy and await planning appointment but due to many side effects worry now if should maybe not take this treatment. The dcis might never have caused me a problem and may never come back. If it czne back or if it came back as invasive cancer it would be caught early and treated.  If I have radiotherapy now I cannot get it again on the same breast. Should I risk long term side effects from radiotherapy when I could maybe just ve monitored with mammograms.

  • Hi Liz 233 and thanks for posting.

I was sorry to read that you have had treatment for DCIS.

It can be overwhelming, trying to make a treatment decision. It may be difficult because no one can say which side effects you will have, or whether or not the DCIS will return if you decide not to have radiotherapy which in turn causes a lot of uncertainty.

It is important to know there is no wrong decision here, the decision you make will be the right one for you at the time. I wondered if you have had a chance to discuss this with your breast care nurse and if they were aware of how you are feeling. It might be worth contacting them as they know your situation and they would be able to talk this through with you.

It may sound simple, but sometimes it can be helpful just to write a list of the advantages and disadvantages of having treatment, as this might help clarify how you feel about having radiotherapy. It may also be helpful to discuss this with your family and friends.

If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

For some people, it helps to chat with people who are in a similar situation for example by joining a forum like Cancer Chat. Breast Cancer Now, also has a forum on its website which you can find here.

You may have seen this already, we have information about DCIS on our website. Macmillan Cancer Support also has information about making treatment decisions which you can find here.

I hope this helps in some way. Please do get back to us for more information and support if needed.

    Take care

    Jemma
