Thyroid biopsy.

Hi,

ive been waiting nearly 4 weeks (4weeks Wednesday) for my biopsy results! Is this normal?, ive had the lump for 3 years and they only biopsied it recently as it got alot bigger, ive had 3 ultrasounds over the last 3 years on it, when i went for my biopsy, there was 2 drs in the room at first looking at my scans comparing them to previous ones, they went in there atleast 10 mins before i was called in, they said it could “possibly” be ectopic thyroid tissue!? But my necks been hurting so much more recently and ive had other symptoms for the last 3 years! im riddled with anxiety over it and i have heard nothing back at all! Ive been ringing my drs who say i just have to wait! Anyone been through the same?

thank you

  • I haven't had your experience but I did have thyroid cancer and I had no pain nor any other symptoms, so I wouldn't necessarily assume they make cancer likely. (I know thyroid cancer can cause neck pain, but it is also common for it to be pretty much symptomless and I suspect any nodule that is pressing on something could cause pain.)

Hope you get answers soon and that it is something minor.

  • Hello Lisa1495 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are still for waiting biopsy results and appreciate what an anxious time this must be for you.

The time people are waiting for biopsy results will vary between individuals and hospitals depending on the urgency of the test as well as any backlogs and staff shortages in the NHS at the moment.

If people are on the suspected cancer pathway there is an expectation that these should be fast tracked through as quickly as possible but even so some people are sadly waiting much longer than they ought to.

Whilst I'm afraid there is little else to do but wait, try and keep your mind on other things whilst you do this, do perhaps call the hospital department where you had the biopsy to ask if they have any idea when the results will be back.

I really hope you know more soon and that everything works out okay for you. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
