First Chemo

I have my first chemotherapy coming up.

2 days later my husband is gettingc2 awards at a big posh awards evening.

There will be approximately 200 people there on tables of 10.

Should I avoid going?

Should I go and wear a mask?

Will I be OK?

I dont drink alcohol anyway, it was more to see him awarded and support him?

  • Hello Misspinky , I can only tell you how I was after my chemo for breastcancer . I felt really well and didn’t have many side effects. A bit of brain fog for a few days and tiredness in the afternoon but that was all. I would have a nap and be fine .Listen to your body .  We are all different though ,I would just see how you are feeling on the day and take it from there .
I also think a mask is a good idea as it’s a big function, have you had your Covid and flu vacc?. Good luck and let me know how it goes ,best wishes xxx

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

As it is 2 days after your first chemotherapy, your blood count will not yet be affected. This means that your white cell count will not have lowered yet, so you would not be at a significant increased risk of getting an infection. So in theory, you would have the same level of risk as the general population at this point in time. I think you could go to the event.

It is more important to thoroughly hand wash, and use an alcohol hand gel to be honest, as more germs are passed on this way. A N95 mask would probably reduce any risk further, but I appreciate that this might not be easy.

    I hope that this helps,

    Kind regards,

    Vanda

  • Thank you, that's really helpful. Hope you are doing well xx

  • Thank you ghats also helped a lot. I'm a bit if an obsessive hand washer so good to know that habit will do me well! My husband will be pleased I won't "be in danger" (he's quite dramatic)

    Thank you for replying xx
