questions about possible diagnosis

Hiya, about a week and a half ago, i went to the hospital for an appointment about some symptoms possibly indicating lymphoma.

to keep a long story short, i am waiting to be scheduled an ultrasound, and i had a blood test, which was testing for pretty much everything, including full blood count, blood smear, kidney & liver function, and thyroid function (i think that’s what these tests are called, sorry if i’m wrong haha).

i got the results of my blood tests a couple days ago, and everything is normal and as it should be.

i feel a lot better, but since my maternal great grandma passed away from lymphoma, i won’t feel completely reassured until im told i definitely do not have lymphoma.

i know it is highly unlikely, but my question is that is it possible to still be diagnosed with lymphoma considering the results of my blood tests.

i would ask my doctor at the hospital, but i feel like i would look silly even asking it, but i’m a very anxious person.

thank you for anyone who responds x

  • Hi Faithlove8,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am afraid that I cannot answer your question about diagnosis, solely on the basis of a blood test, as I am not a doctor. Please do ask your doctor at the hospital, as there's no such thing as a silly question. If you do not understand what you are being told at any time, please ask for an explanation. If you do have lymphoma  - and I sincerely hope that you don't, you need to know everything about it.

The other way you could find out, is to phone one of the nurses on this site. They are available from Monday - Friday, from 9.00am - 5.00PM. Their number is 0808 800 4040.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thank you so much for your reply, you have made me feel better about asking my doctor questions. Next time I see my doctor (which will be for my ultrasound) I will ask any questions i have.

    Thank you again,

    Faithlove8 xx

  • Hi Faithlove,

It is your doctor's job to explain everything to you clearly and to make sure that you understand. Always ask about anything you don't understand and keep asking,  until you are sure that you know exactly what s/he is talking about. I hope that the appointment for your ultrasound comes through soon.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear that you are having investigations and I can understand that it can all be quite unsettling. There are many different conditions that can occur other then cancer that may explain your recent symptoms so try not to overthink it for now.

It is really only your own medical doctors who can give you an opinion about why you are having your symptoms and what your blood test results mean.

It does sound like you are having a range of tests to get to the bottom of it all.

Having a parent, brother or sister diagnosed with lymphoma slightly increases your risk but this is not a major risk factor. The general risk of inheriting it is small and most people who get NHL don't have a relative who have had it. It was also your great grandma who developed it and not your siblings or parents.

No question is silly and if it is preying on your mind then do ask them.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a ring. Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
