Severe high grade abnormal cells help me please

I had different results at my smear this year..my last one came back as severe dyskariosis cn3 . I was invited for loop excision. This nurse left me with many questions that I have decided to go private. I have started a smear and had a phone call from exactly same nurse that it confirmed it came back severe again. Now her and private consultant said the cervix looks normal. My private consultant said that the cin2 or cin 3 could be up the canal and recommended loop excision. I said I will go private with him. But I am absolutely a wreck. How are they gonna remove the cells from the canal if the cervix is normal??? Will they have to cut through the normal to get to the canal?? Will I be able to have children after this. I am 30 and have no kids. My husband is my second partner. Please someone with similar experience can help me or advise . No one is explaining anything to me I have no one to turn to!!!

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m sorry to read about your situation and can understand you have some questions.

As I am sure you are aware the screening programme is all about prevention by picking up abnormality at an early stage where they can either be monitored or treated until everything returns to normal.

When abnormal changes are detected, they are usually found in the cells that cover the surface of the cervix. But sometimes changes are seen in glandular cells. These sorts of cells don't sit on the surface, they tend to be found in the narrow cervical canal which leads up to the inside of the womb. So they are higher up in the cervix. But I am not sure how much cervix needs to be removed with the Lletz procedure.

Occasionally after treatment for abnormal cells the cervical canal can narrow or close up which might lead to a problem in conceiving. This is called cervical stenosis but if this happens, it can be corrected by dilating the canal in a small procedure. And after treatment, there can be a small risk of a baby being born a bit sooner than it would have been otherwise.

You can read more about both this on another charity website called  Jo's Trust. Look at their page about treatment with LLETZ (large loop excision of the transformation zone).

I am sorry I can't be more specific but please do talk to your team about this and do get back to us if you need to. You are welcome to give us a call if you want to talk anything over, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am -5pm Monday to Friday.

Hopefully other forum users will come along and share their experiences. But please bear in mind that it is not guaranteed that you will connect with someone who is going through the same situation as you.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
