can a nurse see with the naked eye cell changes? Happened to me today at a smear

Hello,

I had a smear test 3 years where they sent me to the hospital for a coloscopy because I had HPV. They found changes but werent too worried and didnt do a biopsy and just said to have a smear test every year from now on

I didnt go last year ( I know, stupid) so I missed a year and went today. She did my smear test and said there was no point waiting for the result, she can see cell changes so would refer me to the hospital. She said she would fast track it for me by mentioning cancer but told me not to panic, that doesnt mean I have it, but otherwise Id have a long wait

She was very nice but when I left I felt super confused, is it really possible to see with the naked eye? Does that mean its big changes to be able to, I wasn't sure that was possible, I just thought you needed to wait for the result.

Im really worrying now, thinking if she could just see it like that then it must be bad.

has this ever happened to anyone before?

  • Hello, and thanks for posting.

Although no one can say for certain whether there are cell changes or what those changes are just by looking at the cervix, the nurse may have a good idea from her experience of doing cervical screening, especially if she has been doing this for a long time. However, it is not until the cells are looked at closely under the microscope that you will have confirmation of any definite cell changes.

It sounds like the nurse has referred you on what can be known as a two-week wait for a suspected cancer pathway or an urgent referral depending on where you live. I know this sounds worrying, but it is important to know this does not mean that you have cancer, and the majority of the time it isn't, but it does mean you will be seen more urgently and have any abnormal cells removed as soon as possible.

You may have seen this already, on our website we have information about abnormal cervical cells and treatment here

I hope this helps, do get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You can also talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care
