Feacal Calprotectin of 409

Hi im looking for some advice. Ive recent had a stool test with my GP due to fatigue, blood in my stools and changes in my bowel movements. My results have come back above range and are 409. my doctor has referred me but said it's just routine and doesn't require an urgent referral. I since received my results and it clearly says anything over 250 requires an urgent referral. I also have a history of very low ferratin levels, however, I have recently had a blood transfusion to rectify this as I was permanently exhausted. My doctor obviously hasn't considered the low iron as my iron levels were fine on this recent test but only due to the fact that I have just had a blood transfusion. Im now very worries about colon cancer and don't know what to do about getting this referral changed to urgent. It's impossible to get a GP to call me at my surgery too. What should I do? Thanks in advance for the advise

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have and appreciate you must be worried.

There are strict guidelines about who should be referred onto a suspected bowel cancer urgent pathway by NICE here. Patients must meet the set criteria otherwise the referral will be down graded to a routine referral.

Unfortunately a referral onto this pathway needs to be made by a GP so I suggest you try and speak to your doctor when you can. It may be easier if you can pop into the surgery and speak with the receptionist about making an appointment.

It is important that you tell your GP what you are most concerned about so they can reassess you and either change the referral or give a reason why they aren't concerned to put your mind at ease.

Wishing you all the best and hope everything turns out okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi
