Tamoxifen and delayed periods

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2019. I underwent a mastectomy followed by 8 rounds of chemo and 30 rounds of radiotherapy. I have been taking tamoxifen since the end of my treatment in June 2020. My periods stopped during my first chemo session and I have not had one for 3 years and 9 months and was told that I had almost certainly gone through menopause (I'm 48 now).

However, yesterday I started bleeding and it feels like a normal period with slight stomach discomfort like I used to have prior to having cancer.

Is this normal or should I get it checked out as I know there are links to womb cancer?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to see that you are being treated for breast cancer.

I think it is a good idea to let your breast care nurse or see your GP about this bleed. It is not necessarily due to having womb cancer but you do need to get checked out. This may mean you need to have an ultrasound scan to see what is happening.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
