2nd referral to breast clinic

Hi there. I was referred to the breast clinic in January after finding a lump around the nipple in my right breast. After an ultras sound as I was 39, a thin needle biopsy and then a full biopsy as the lump was hard the results came back as a benign fibroadenoma.

I noticed another lump just above my nipple on my left breast a month ago. This time I didn’t panic and the. I felt a very small hard lump in the top left of the same breast. I went to the GP just incase and she felt another hard lump and asked if I had been told my breasts were glandular. What does she mean by this? She’s referred me on the urgent referral again.

whilst I don’t feel as panicked, I have found myself back here feeling a little nervous. X

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I was sorry to read that you have found another breast lump and have now been referred back to the breast clinic.

Breasts are made up of fat, glandular tissue divided into lobes (each containing lots of lobules), a network of ducts or milk ducts, and connective tissue. Young women especially will have more glandular tissue than fat, meaning the breasts are more dense. There are various degrees of density and a woman's breast density can change throughout her lifetime. How dense a woman's breasts are will depend on their age, genetics, menopausal status and family history. Other factors that can affect the breast density are weight gain and certain medications.

Having dense breasts can make a mammogram less clear so normal changes or benign breast conditions can be harder to identify. This is why an ultrasound of the breast is usually done for women under the age of 40. Although some young women may have a mammogram as well depending on their situation.

I know it is worrying for you but your GP has done the right thing by referring you back to the breast clinic to make sure everything is OK. When you have your next appointment, it will be worth speaking to the breast specialist about your individual situation and they will be able to give you more of an idea of how dense your breasts are and what this might mean for you. You may have seen this already, Breast Cancer Now has information about fibroadenoma which you can read here

I hope this helps in some way, please get back to us if you need to  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

  • Thanks Jemma. Thanks for the suggestion of asking about the density of my breasts as last time I never asked anything, just listened and then came out thinking I wished I’d asked this
