Colposcopy

Hello

Since starting the mini pill I began bleeding after sex. I had a smear, internal examination and an internal ultrasound. All came back normal. I stopped the contraception and it has continued. I hav e now been referred for a colposcopy. Is it possible that the 3 examinations before this had missed something? Everyone seems confused.

Thank you for your help

  • Hello Lbcd and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing some irregular bleeding and appreciate what a worry this must be for you.

Unfortunately no one here can say what the cause of this bleeding may be. There can be many reasons to bleed after sex. Yes the oral contraceptive can cause this to happen and sometimes for a while after it has stopped. Other things include vaginal dryness, infection and ectropians ( although the cervix usually would look red on examination if this were the cause). Whilst cervical cancer can be a possibility this only accounts for 2% of women who have bleeding after sex.

It sounds like the doctors are being thorough in sending you to colposcopy where they can view your cervix more closely. If they find any abnormality they can take biopsies to be looked at under a microscope but hopefully anything more serious can be ruled out.

Try not to over think this for now if you can. It is reassuring that all the tests and examinations so far haven't highlighted anything abnormal and hopefully the colposcopy will do the same.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will turn out okay for you.

Do get back in touch if needed and also do feel free to call us on 0808 800 4040 weekdays 9-5 if you prefer.

    Take care
