Single mastectomy with reconstruction

Hi,

i am looking for some advice please.

I am due to have my surgery on Thursday for a single mastectomy but I will be having an implant reconstruction at the same time.

i am very nervous, has anyone had this please?

I also have to decide on the tear drop or the round implant, iv been advised that the tear drop will look more natural. But I am really worried about the small % of lymphoma, which is making me want to go for the round implant.

can I ask if anyone had the tear drop implant?

I am just worried in general at this time, I am only 35 and my left breast is unstable with 3 cancerous lumps.

thank you xxx

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your forthcoming surgery.

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCC) is a rare type of lymphoma of the breast. Most people with breast implants do not develop BIA-ALCL but it is important that a patient is informed of any possible risks however small the risk may be. In many cases, removing the breast implants cures the lymphoma.

You will have regular follow up appointments after surgery and your surgeon will check for any signs of lymphoma. Following your reconstructive surgery you will be advised to look for any lumps or swelling.

Do make sure that you have had discussions with your surgeon and breast care nurse and you have had a chance to have all of your questions answered. Let them know abut any concerns that you have.

There is some information on breast reconstruction on Breast Cancer Now's website here and our website here.

You have posted in 'Ask the Nurses' but if you post on a different thread or start your own you may find you get more responses from women who have had a similar surgery.

Breast Cancer Now also have a service called 'Someone like Me' where they can put you in touch with someone who is going through a similar course of treatment. Have a look here

Breast Cancer Now also have support for younger women with breast cancer. They use various online and face book support groups which you may find helpful to join.

I do hope that you are getting support and help from family and your friends.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are very welcome to do so. We are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and our helpline number is freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
