Chronic one sided swelling in throat

A few years ago I took really unwell with glandular fever, this led to a few hospital stays and really bad tonsilitis, particularly on the right side leading to query quinsy. After this I had continuous problems with my right tonsil, starting off as pain, visibly more different in shape to the right, numb to touch and swelling above the right tonsil on the roof of my mouth. This is painful when pressure is applied. It is painful when I put pressure on the right side of my neck and makes me cough. The symptoms have never went away and I have suffered with continuous viral infections and poor immune system since. I was recently diagnosed with HPV which was found in my first smear test. I have been advised to return in 9 months time to get another smear to see if my body has got rid of the virus. I am very worried that the virus is connected to the ongoing issues with my throat. I had been given multiple courses of antibiotics over time as nobody knew what the cause for the problem was. In May I had swabs done plus blood tests just to rule out infection. Everything came back clear, since the GP is confident that this is not an infection I have therefore been made an urgent referral to ENT.  However I still have another six months wait until I can get seen by a specialist. I would like some advice and reassurance. I don’t know wether to speak to my gp again about getting seen sooner as I feel like this could be something more sinister but I am not sure wether it is just my anxiety that is making me worried?

  • Hello ChloeM97 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the ongoing symptoms you are having and appreciate what a worry they must be for you.

Unfortunately no one here can say what is going on and if you remain concerned it is best to arrange to speak with your GP again. Doctors are in the best position to assess you and if they think it warrants the speediest referral in the NHS they can change your current referral to the suspected cancer pathway.

There can be many reasons for symptoms and even when they persist or reoccur most of the time it won't be that anything as serious as a cancer that is the problem, so try not to over think too much for now.

We usually encourage people to take things one step at a time and to keep themselves occupied with other things whilst waiting for appointments or tests as this can help.

Please get back in touch if you need to. If you prefer feel free to give one of the nurses a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care

    Naomi
