Hi Kirsty
I wore a bra straight away
how are you feeling ?
Hello, and thanks for your post,
You may have had a chance to ask your breast cancer nurse for their advice since it has been a few days since you posted.
A sports bra may feel quite supportive and comfortable after surgery but I think you need to see how the area feels as you will expect to have some swelling following the surgery. Breast Cancer Now advises wearing a soft cotton bra that can be a size bigger to take into account any swelling. Everyone is so different a lot depends on the amount of tissue that was removed during the surgery. It is probably a question of seeing what feels comfortable for you.
Breast Cancer Now has some information on the types of bras that women may find comfortable which you can see here
Macmillan gives the following information about bras after surgery which you can see here
You will probably be having a follow-up appointment after your surgery where your wound and any swelling can be assessed. Do take this time to ask the breast care nurse for advice on bras that may suit your breasts.
I hope this information helps. If you would like to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so.
We are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.
All the best,
Catherine
