Vaginal examination findings

Hi my gp examined me and the 2week referral to cancer clinic says on examination mid way up appears black is rough with serousy discharge. My gp said to me I am so sorry this is not good news and we will have you seen asap to confirm the diagnosis

my question is this, is there any small chance at all that this is nothing (not cancer) or is that extremely unlikely and it is now a case of staging and treatment plan once the scans and confirmation are done

  • Hello, and thanks for posting.

It can be a worrying time waiting for investigations and tests. Although it sounds like your GP is concerned, it is only when you have further tests and investigations that cancer can be confirmed. It is likely you will need to have a close examination of your vagina with a colposcopy and have a sample of cells removed to be looked at closely under a microscope (biopsy). We have more detailed information here. Unfortunately, until you have these tests no one can say with any certainty whether or not you have cancer

It can take a few days or weeks before you get the results and this can be a very worrying time. You might have contact details for a specialist nurse who you can contact for information if you need to. It can also help to talk to a close friend or relative about how you feel. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses on our helpline by calling the freephone number 0808 800 4040 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Jemma
