To ensure quality assurance standards, some pathology specimens are sent to larger laboratories, in different hospitals, to be tested and analysed. This can be because there might be different technology used, and more expertise. The quality assurance accreditation of certain laboratories demonstrates technical competence for a defined scope, (certain types of specimens), and that there is a medical laboratory quality management system in place. Sometimes specimens are reviewed by more than one pathologist.
