Changing Hospitals?

Morning,

So i was sent to a hospital not my choice on the 2 week pathway, so went yesterday and unfortunately found out i have colon cancer at 38.

The hospital i was sent to is not my local one, my wife doesn't drive and i have 3 kids 2 are disabled, so been able to start my treatment at the hospital I want to go to would be better as i would have my mum and sister for support.

Do you know if I can ask to sent to another hospital, as i really don't want to go to that hospital. How would i get to appointment if I'm to ill to drive? And i can't afford taxis, so been seen at the hospital i want would be better as i would have my sister to help with drive.

  • Hi I’m so sorry to read your post . I would suggest giving the nurse practitioner a call and explain to her /him your dilemma , she could then ask your consultant to refer you onto the hospital that is nearer , providing of course they are able to provide the treatment you need . Failing that , I suggest that you ring your consultants secretary . I wish you good luck xx

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. You could do what the other forum member suggested and ring to speak to the Consultant's secretary or specialist nurse if you have one and ask if it was possible for you to be referred.  You could also talk to your GP and get their opinion.

You need to make sure that the hospital near your mum and sister is able to provide any treatment that you require.

Some hospitals offer a free car service which is run by volunteers so it is worth looking into all the different options. I would also ask what the wait time would be to start treatment if you plan to go to a hospital near your mum and sister.

You may find it more helpful to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses. our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Arrange an urgent appointment with your GP. Part of their role is to act as the gatekeeper for NHS services. As a patient you have the right to choose the best hospital to meet your needs.

Most GPs will prioritise you if you tell them you have a cancer diagnosis.

    Good luck!
