Bleeding after menopause

So, I had a bleed after being in the menopause 2 years. I had ultrasound and a camera etc. They found a very small cyst (approx 1.5cm) they took blood and gave me an appointment in 6 months time for a further scan.

I've now had a letter back saying some of my blood tests were out of the normal range and that I now have another appointment in 2 weeks with, in the first instance, gynaecology! I'm absolutely terrified! What does 'in the first instance' mean???

Thankyou

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I can understand how unsettling the not knowing must be for you but try not to overthink it for now.

It is difficult for us to know for certain what your doctors meant as we are not involved in your care. The gynaecologist will perhaps want to review the tests that you have already had and perhaps request some more.

As you had bleeding after menopause one of the conditions that the doctors may be ruling out is cancer. One of the blood tests that may have been out of the normal range is the CA125. CA125 is a protein that is found in blood and can be raised if there is any inflammation in the pelvic area.

Although CA125 levels can be above the normal range in ovarian cancer, it can be raised in several other conditions as well, for example fibroid or in your case your ovarian cyst.

In the 'first instance' may mean that the gynaecologist wants to find out what is causing your blood tests to be slightly raised.

Try and take one day and a time.

If you feel that it would be helpful to chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more than welcome to give us a ring.

Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040. We are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,
