Bleeding after sex

Hi, I had a smear test in June and everything came back okay, since the smear test every time I have sex I bleed, I’m on the implant and I don’t get a period, I don’t have any symptoms of an STI, I’ve been with the same partner for 9 years. I’ve recently found out that I have fibroadenoma in my left breast, I’ve done a blood test with the doctors because I’m constantly tired, to the point where I can fall asleep standing up, I get the results back for that tomorrow. Do you think I’m being over panicky as a lot of my family members have been diagnosed with cancer, should I get it checked out?

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are worried about this. I think you are getting your blood test results today, so you may have spoken to the doctor already. But do let them know of the bleeding after sex.

There can be many reasons why this can happen, but best to let a doctor know as they can assess and decide if further investigation is needed.

People often get more worried and think they have cancer in their family. Actually very few cancers run in families (hereditary) . Here is more information on what causes cancer, and this talks specifically about hereditary cancers.

Take care and if helpful do call the helpline to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.

  • Hi thanks for reply, the doctor rang me with my blood results and it came back as my folic acid levels are extremely low and my liver came back high, i tried to question the doctor about the bleeding after sex but they’re only allowed to discuss one problem at a time so I’ve got to make an appointment

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Bleeding after sex is usually due to non cancer conditions, such as cervical ectropion which is quite common in younger women.

You can read more about cervical ectropion on the website of another charity, Jo's Trust at the ink below.

    https://www.jostrust.org.uk/information/cervix/cervical-ectropion

A cervical ectropion is not an early sign or a symptom of cervical cancer, but it can cause similar symptoms for example bleeding after sex. Sometimes people are referred to have a colposcopy (a close examination of the cervix)  if the ectropion is causing problems with bleeding. You can discuss this further with your practice nurse or GP if you remain concerned.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
