A little confused..

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the end of nov 22, I had a high anterior resection in early January. In early February I went to get my results of the resection and to find out if I needed further treatment. They said that they could only find 2 lymph nodes and that they had seen 3 lesions on my liver. After a very very long feeling week, the nurse rang me back to tell me that the lesions we hemangeomas and harmless. And that they had rechecked and found 10more lymph nodes that were all clear. I don’t know why but all of a sudden I’m very worried about the results. When the resection was done, do the surgeons take out a large chunk of flesh and search through it once removed for the lymph nodes, in a lab or something, or do they look for individual nodes to remove during the resection? Also are they able to go back and look at the removed bowel for more nodes 3-4weeks after the resection? Thanks

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I would get in touch with the specialist nurse and talk to them about your concerns. I am sure that the pathologist would have looked at the whole specimen in some detail. This would then have been discussed at the formal MDT (Multidisciplinary team meeting) where all the doctors involved would have discussed your case.

It does sound like they rechecked your specimen but were not concerned about the lymph nodes that they examined.

There will be documented notes from the MDT on what the pathologist examined. They will have your specimen but they don't tend to go back and reexamine it unless they have a good reason to do so.

I am not sure whether you have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon or specialist nurse because you could also use this as an opportunity to discuss what concerns you.

We have information about follow-up on our website here and the charity Bowel Cancer UK has more information here.

Your GP would have also received notes on any treatment that you have had so it might be helpful to discuss this with them.

It is unsettling having had a cancer diagnosis and worrying whether it will return but hopefully talking this through with your team will help put your mind at rest.

If you would like to ring and speak to one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring. We are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
