Aromatase Inhibitors

Just wondering if Letrozole is the right treatment for ER-/Pr+ as it is an anti-estrogen treatment.

  • Hello Madrid, and thank you for posting.

The best people to talk to about your treatment plan is someone from your hospital team. They are experts in breast cancer so will know the right treatment for you and your type of breast cancer.

ER- (negative) means that the cancer cells do not have any oestrogen receptors, but PR+ (positive) means it does have progesterone receptors. Read here for more about about hormone receptors and breast cancer.

These cancers benefit from hormone therapies that will reduce the progesterone hormone in the body, like those discussed here on the Breast Cancer Now website.

Hormonal treatments like letrozole are called aromatase inhibitors and are often used when women have had the menopause. They stop aromatase that is produced in the body being turned into oestrogen. This means they are usually prescribed for those who have an oestrogen (ER+ve) cancer.

Take care Madrid and please do talk this all through with your team or maybe call your breast specialist nurse (CNS) to ask any questions about your treatment. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
