Discussed at mdt?

Hi, I am looking for advice regarding why it means to have biopsy results discussed at the MDT meeting please?

I attended the breast clinic last week with a lump in the outer, upper quadrant of my left breast. It is a fixed marble sized lump which is solid and palpable. I was sent for the ultrasound where it was graded as U3 and I had 3 core biopsies taken. I went back to see the consultant who booked in a telephone call for next week. I called on Friday to see if there had been any results yet and the secretary advised that I was scheduled for discussion on that afternoons MDT meeting and they couldn’t discuss my results but would be in touch. It has now worried me as everything I have seen regarding MDT is in relation to formulating treatment plans for new cancer diagnosis’

I know I am likely just being overly anxious but it’s really stressed me out since hearing it as there isn’t much information other than relating to cancer that I have seen.

thank you for taking the time to read my post x x

  • Hello bec 23

Sorry you are having a worrying time

when I asked my consultant about MDT meetings I was told that she alone could not make a decision on anything solely everything has to go through the meetings for example I asked about results and was told you can. Not have any results until it was discussed with the team on so and so date .

so I think results good and bad still have to go through this process, have you got a breast care nurse ? These are usually very good and can possibly explain this to you just tell them you are not sleeping and worrying and you need some answers it’s worth a try I was a nuisance patient but I always got what I wanted so it worked for me xx

good luck big hugs love Lara xxx

  • Becs

I just read your post again regarding your biopsy and U3 thete is no way of knowing until the biopsy comes back if this is going to be bad news , I think they can sort of tell you what they think it is but can’t ever be sure until that biopsy comes back from the lab .try not to worry all the worrying in the world is not going to change a single thing  , do not google this makes things a million times worse my lovely xx

    love Lara xxx

  • Hi Lara, thank you for your reply! It makes me feel a lot better, I know that I need to just chill out with the Googling and wait and see what they say on Wednesday, I think I’m just so nervous I’m terrible with waiting for things as I let myself dwell on the worst case scenario. X x

  • Morning, I have just called the secretaries to see if there was any change to my scheduled telephone call booked for Wednesday following the MDT meeting on Friday and she said at the moment it is all still on for Wednesday morning to I am taking that as a positive that it has not been changed to an in person appointment, here is hoping it stays that way as I cant imagine they would deliver negative results over the phone x

  • Becs

Sounds very promising I’m happy for you xx

  • I hope everything comes back ok but just in case this can provide even a tiny bit of relief. I had a breast biopsy a couple of weeks ago that was discussed at an MDT meeting and mine was absolutely fine.

From what I gather every biopsy is discussed at an MDT, i think maybe its to discuss what was found and everyone is in agreement that it is ok or needs further treatment? Don’t quote me but i think it’s something like that.

Either was not everything discussed at an MDT meeting is bad.

    Good Luck xx

  • Hello Bec2023 and thanks for posting,

MDTs aren't only about formulating treatment plans they also review test results and have a role to play in making a diagnosis which isn't always cancer.

There is no way around waiting to find out what they think. And thankfully there isn't too much longer to wait now.  In the meantime, if you can, try and distract yourself and do things to manage the inevitable stress that uncertainly brings in situations like this.

Feel free to give us a ring if it would help to talk anything over, our number is 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays from 9-5.

    All the best,

  • Thank you both for your replies, this has helped hugely with the wait, I am going to wait and see what they say on Wednesday, it’s very good to know it’s not just cancer that needs to be discussed at the meetings as it puts my mind at ease, so thank you x x

  • Good morning everyone, just wanted to update to say the hospital has just called and thankfully all benign and a fibroadenoma :) thank you for all the support and good luck to anyone else awaiting results x x x
