Breast cancer diagnosis

I was at the breast clinic yesterday. Had mammogram then ultrasound. The consultant performed the ultrasound and then said it was cancer and said may be lumpectomy or mastectomy...was a little taken back by the bluntness. Then had core biopsy 3 from breast 2 from armpit. Then advised I needed to have another mammogram to check clips in correct position that they had put in....nothing about these where explained. I was then given a leaflet with my breast nurse name and contact details and told I have appointment by phone in 2 weeks to advise a treatment plan

Can a diagnosis be made before the biopsy.

Thanks

I had breast cancer last year ll diagnosed July 22

May my first appointment before biopsy result I was told it was likely to be a cancer diagnosis the biopsy the week after unfortunately confirmed this , I think they see characteristics and sort of no thsts it’s going to be a diagnosis but it’s not 100 percent until biopsy result

just to say a diagnosis is a shock and a rollercoaster but it’s no way as bad as you think I’m fully back to life as normal feels like it never happened now don’t get me wrong I had a few wobble days but overall after the shock I was fine

good luck here to chat or listen anytime big hugs love Lara xx

I was exactly the same it’s one big slap in the face I understand one day I’d be like no way this is happening and everyone saying it’s gunna be coming back fine , I k we deep down what was coming , so I sort of prepared myself when I had the news I was shocked but out my big girl pants on and thought no way you having me , I continued to work right through and didn’t change one single thing that’s how I coped and it worked for me xxx love Lara xx

That's exactly how I feel, but know once I know I will be right....let's do this ..lol. what treatment did you have Lara?

  • Hello and thanks for posting.

I am sorry to read that you are waiting for biopsy results. This must be a worrying time for you

I agree with with Laraj, sometimes the doctors will have a good idea of what they are seeing on the mammogram and ultrasound because of the characteristics of the abnormal area that has been found. However, it is the biopsy that will confirm whether or not it is a cancer.

It might be worth giving your breast nurse a call just to clarify things for you, especially as you say, things weren't really explained about the 2nd Mammogram and getting the clips checked. The metal clips are inserted to mark the abnormal area so that this can be easily found again if further tests or surgery is needed. In the meantime you may find it helpful to look at our information on tests for breast cancer here.

Waiting for results can be a difficult time . You would be welcome to call the cancer information nurses directly for any more information or support. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    I hope this helps.

    Take care
