Breast cancer follow up

I had surgery and radiotherapy for Grade 2 breast cancer in July 2018. I have since had 5 clear mammograms and have been taking letrozole.
Is that it now? Or do I have any more appointments? I was under the impression I would have a last appointment with the consultant. I have heard nothing and the Macmillan nurses just aren’t answering the phone. Do I just stop the letrozole, I wonder..
I feel a bit stressed and left up in the air..Any thoughts?

  • Hi , I would be inclined to continue with Letrozole until you have spoken to your consultant. I would ring the breast specialist nurse at the hospital or your consultants secretary to see if you can see your consultant again x My colleague was on it for 10 years x

  • Hello HunterT and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you can't get hold of the breast care nurse team and can understand you feeling unsure and possibly a little bit apprehensive about stopping letrozole. I think it is reasonable enough for you to want some confirmation that your treatment should be coming to an end as originally recommended.

5 years of letrozole is often what is recommended but there is no harm in checking this out - it would be reassuring as finishing treatment can often feel a bit unsettling. Breast care nurses usually have an answering machine, so if you haven't already,  do leave them a message so they can get back to you, otherwise persevere in trying to get in touch. If you don't hear from them you could try asking the Patient Advice and Liaisons Service (PALS) if they can help. PALS services are explained on the NHS website at this link.  You could also try leaving a message with your consultant's secretary (via the hospital switchboard) and your GP might be able to get in touch with them too.

I do hope you are able to speak to someone from the hospital team about this to put your mind at rest.

If you want to talk anything over please give us a ring on 0808 800 4040. We are around weekdays, from 9-5.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia
