Does urgent referal mean i have cancer?

I was referred for an MRI brain scan after suffering from headaches when standing for sevesral years - no other symptoms.  I don't think anyone thought there was much chance this was cancer. However, i was told a week after the nerologist returned from holiday to make an urgent appointment for a f2f meeting - which is happening in 4 days. Does this mean I have cancer, or are there other things the scan may have revealed? Is there a way to get any info prior to my apponyment? Thank you.

  • Hi Krisser,

I’m not a medic or a nurse but there are lots of things the MRI might have shown - some of which would have led to an emergency hospital admission via ambulance. Many of these are far less serious than cancer. It would be stupid of me to say “don’t worry” as I know how scary waiting for results is but try not to concentrate on the negatives.

    Best wishes

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am afraid that we cannot tell you that having an appointment in a few days face to face is anything to be concerned about.  All we can say is it does not necessarily mean you will be told you have cancer.

Waiting to be seen I know may be a worry for you, so I hope you have support at this time.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
